01 · Background
From London, Ontario to the captain’s armband
Fleming started soccer with Nor’West Optimist in London at three and also competed in hockey, track and cross-country. She entered Canada’s youth programme at 14 and made her senior debut at 15. Four seasons at UCLA preceded a trophy-filled spell with Chelsea, where she won league and cup titles, before Portland Thorns brought her to the NWSL in 2024. Canada named her captain after Christine Sinclair’s international retirement.
02 · How she plays
The link between every part of the team
Fleming’s game is built on scanning, close control and passing angles. Canada Soccer’s technical reports have praised her technique, vision, decision-making, mobility and ability to connect defence with attack. Portland describe her as a central anchor who dictates tempo, supports the attack and helps the back line stop opposition moves. She rarely needs a dramatic action to influence a match; the value is in receiving cleanly and making the next phase easier.
03 · Canada role
The standard-setter
As captain, Fleming joins tactical responsibility with an example built on work rate. She can play as a deeper controller or one step higher, where her timing around the box and penalty-taking become useful. Against strong midfields, her ability to keep the ball under contact gives Canada a way to breathe.
