01 · Background
Community roots and a championship résumé
Buchanan grew up in a single-parent home in the Greater Toronto Area, the youngest of seven sisters. She started with Brams United at eight, starred at West Virginia University and became a Canada senior international at 17. Her move to Lyon began a run of five Champions League titles before she joined Chelsea in 2022. Buchanan has consistently linked her journey to the family and community support that helped make elite youth soccer possible.
02 · How she plays
Dominant in the duel, quicker than the danger
Canada Soccer’s tournament reports have repeatedly described Buchanan as strong in one-on-one defending, quick, positionally aware and effective in build-up. Ashley Lawrence’s assessment adds the detail: agility, game reading, varied play on the ball and constant communication. Buchanan can defend forward, matching a striker physically, but also has the recovery speed to cover behind a high line.

The foundation of the back line
At her best, Buchanan lets Canada defend with courage. She can handle isolated duels while the full-backs advance and is comfortable carrying or passing beyond the first press.
