01 · Background

Abidjan to Montréal, then a rapid professional rise

Koné was born in Abidjan and moved to Montréal with his family at seven. He played locally with CS Saint-Laurent and spent only a short period in CF Montréal’s academy before signing a first-team contract in 2021. One full MLS season—and three appearances at the 2022 World Cup—were enough to earn a move to Watford. Marseille, a loan at Rennes and Sassuolo followed.

02 · How he plays

Stride, touch and forward intent

At 1.88 metres, Koné can cover ground with long strides, but he describes his own game through the ball: receiving it, creating for teammates and moving play forward. He can operate as a deeper midfielder or closer to the forwards. His value is the ability to take possession on the turn and carry through the first line of pressure; when he releases at the right moment, Canada can go from stable possession to an attack very quickly.

03 · Canada role

The midfielder who can break a line himself

Canada does not always need a pass to beat pressure when Koné is available. His frame protects the ball and his running can commit an opponent, creating space for the next receiver. The trade-off is decision-making: the same ambition that produces progressive actions needs secure choices when he is the player protecting the centre.
