01 · Background

The patient route out of Brampton

Buchanan was born in Toronto, grew up in Brampton and started with Brampton Youth SC at eight. His path ran through American prep and college soccer, including Syracuse University, before New England Revolution drafted him. A breakout MLS season led to Club Brugge, then Inter Milan and Villarreal. The journey matters: he was not treated as an obvious academy certainty, but kept adding levels through college, MLS and three European leagues.

02 · How he plays

Direct, powerful and difficult to map

Villarreal describe Buchanan as a fast, powerful carrier who can play on either wing or at right-back. He wants the one-on-one: a sharp first movement, a long stride into open grass and the ability to cross or continue into the box. Because he has played as winger, wing-back and full-back, he can create width from different starting positions. His best moments come when he receives facing forward rather than with a defender tight to his back.

03 · Canada role

The pressure-release valve

When Canada is pinned back, Buchanan can turn one outlet pass into territory. When Canada has the ball, he fixes the opposing full-back wide and opens inside space for David or an attacking midfielder. That makes him useful on both sides of a front three and as the high player in a wing-back system.
